Former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss, on a five-day visit to Taiwan, emphasized the need for democratic nations to convey a clear message to Beijing regarding potential consequences if it were to attack Taiwan. Truss expressed concern about President Xi Jinping’s ambitions regarding Taiwan and underscored the importance of protecting Taiwan while making Beijing aware of severe repercussions in case of any forceful actions.

Truss, the first former British leader to visit Taiwan since Margaret Thatcher in 1996, arrived on Tuesday for a visit focused on diplomatic discussions. During a press conference in Taipei, she highlighted the potential threat to Taiwan and urged democratic nations to ensure its protection. Truss acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the timing and method of any potential attack on Taiwan but emphasized the need to prioritize the island’s security.

In addition to discussing Taiwan’s security, Truss proposed the establishment of a more formal NATO-style security alliance in the Asia Pacific, surpassing existing pacts like AUKUS and the Quad. She called for increased coordination among Group of Seven nations and the European Union to exert “coordinated” economic pressure on Beijing, aiming to influence China’s behavior on the global stage.

While Truss’s comments have sparked discussions about the geopolitical landscape, some analysts question the feasibility of her proposals. Critics argue that Truss’s credibility and political baggage may limit the impact of her suggestions. Additionally, the idea of an Asian NATO-style alliance is viewed as unrealistic, with skepticism about its acceptance in the Indo-Pacific region.

Truss’s visit has not been without controversy, with fellow UK politicians expressing concerns about the potential repercussions, particularly in light of the strained UK-China relationship. Truss, known for her outspoken stance on China, faced criticism for the timing and nature of her visit. Some view it as a form of “Instagram diplomacy,” raising questions about its impact on geopolitical dynamics.

China’s embassy in London labeled Truss’s visit as a “dangerous political show” and accused her of colluding with forces in Taiwan advocating for independence. The embassy warned against such actions, suggesting they could have consequences for the UK government led by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Truss defended her visit, emphasizing that nations should not allow a totalitarian regime to dictate international travel and expressing concerns about China’s attempts to make engaging with Taiwan unacceptable.

As Truss navigates diplomatic discussions in Taiwan, her visit highlights the complexities of balancing international relations, security concerns, and the delicate relationship with China. The reactions to her proposals and statements underscore the challenges of addressing geopolitical tensions in the Asia Pacific region.
