A coffee roastery in Finland recently debuted a new blend developed with the assistance of artificial intelligence, marking a potential shift in the industry’s traditional methods. The Helsinki-based Kaffa Roastery unveiled its “AI-conic” blend, the outcome of a collaboration with local AI consultancy Elev, aiming to explore how technology could streamline processes in coffee roasting.
Finnish coffee consumption ranks among the highest globally, making it a fitting location for such experimentation. The blend, composed of four bean varieties primarily featuring Brazil’s Fazenda Pinhal, was crafted using AI algorithms inspired by models like ChatGPT and Copilot. According to Elev, the AI was tasked with innovatively combining flavors to cater to coffee enthusiasts’ preferences.
Svante Hampf, Kaffa Roastery’s managing director, expressed surprise at the AI’s choice to incorporate four distinct bean types, deviating from the typical two or three. Nevertheless, blind taste tests confirmed the blend’s excellence, requiring no human adjustments. The AI also designed the packaging and provided detailed flavor descriptions.
Antti Merilehto, a spokesperson for Elev, highlighted AI-conic as an example of how AI can offer fresh perspectives to industry veterans and deliver unique taste experiences to consumers. Hampf sees this trial as a starting point for exploring AI’s potential in the coffee sector, emphasizing the harmonious blend of artisanal skills and data-driven insights.
As Finland embraces both a rich coffee culture and a thriving tech ecosystem, Kaffa Roastery hopes this initiative sparks conversations among industry professionals about the future of coffee production. Hampf believes AI holds promise for enhancing the industry’s capabilities and looks forward to further collaborations leveraging technology’s strengths.
