Exploring the 2024 Lexus TX: A Versatile Luxury SUV for Families

in Luxury Goods

Family-oriented SUVs remain highly sought-after, particularly among the Gen Y demographic (aged 25-40) as they transition from single to married and parent life. With over 70 million Gen Y individuals in the United States, there’s a growing demand for vehicles that cater to their needs, such as transporting their families. In response to this, Lexus has introduced the 2024 Lexus TX, a 3-row luxury SUV, which is now available at dealerships.

Manufactured at Toyota’s Princeton, Indiana facility, the Lexus TX shares the assembly line with the Toyota Grand Highlander. Both models are designed to meet the requirements of growing families, providing ample passenger and cargo space. However, the Lexus TX stands out with an extensive list of standard features, advanced technology, premium materials, and a correspondingly higher price point.

The 2024 Lexus TX is offered in three trim levels. The base model, the Lexus TX 350, starts at $55,050 and is equipped with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine producing 275 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. It comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive as standard, with an optional all-wheel-drive system available for an additional $1,600. For those seeking a hybrid option, the TX 500h is priced at $69,350, featuring F Sport performance upgrades and all-wheel drive. The hybrid powertrain combines dual electric motors with the 2.4-liter engine, resulting in 366 horsepower and 409 pound-feet of torque.

The TX 350 and TX 500h are already available in showrooms, while the Lexus TX 550h+, a plug-in hybrid model, will be released in early 2024. Pricing for the 550h+ model has not been disclosed, but it is expected to start at over $75,000. This variant features a 3.5-liter V6 engine paired with dual electric motors, delivering 406 horsepower and offering an all-electric range of 33 miles. Acceleration figures vary, with the TX 350 taking around 8 seconds to reach 60 mph, while both hybrid models achieve this in approximately 6 seconds. All three versions can tow up to 5,000 pounds.

Driving experiences with each variant of the TX revealed distinct but comparable characteristics. The base TX 350 offers ample power, a smooth and refined ride, and confident steering. The TX 500h, with its standard all-wheel drive, six-speed automatic transmission, and dual motors, delivers enhanced power delivery and more engaging steering, particularly in “Sport” mode. The TX 500h also features “Rear Dynamic Steering,” enhancing stability and handling dynamics.

The TX 550h+ plug-in hybrid, although equipped with all-wheel drive, lacks the F Sport Performance features of the TX 500h. Consequently, its driving dynamics are akin to the TX 350, but it offers significantly improved fuel efficiency at 29 mpg, as opposed to the TX 350’s 23 mpg. The performance-oriented TX 500h achieves a fuel efficiency rating of 27 mpg, striking a balance between enjoyable driving and value.

Lexus has made space a priority in the TX, with a focus on interior packaging. As a result, the SUV provides 20 cubic feet of storage space behind the third row, which can accommodate seven carry-on bags, or one for each passenger. Folding down the third-row seats increases the cargo space to 57 cubic feet, and further folding the second-row seat-backs expands the capacity to 97 cubic feet, rivaling Toyota’s box-like Sienna minivan at 101 cubic feet behind the front seats.

Beyond specifications, the interior of the Lexus TX is luxurious and well-appointed, offering a wide range of standard and optional features. Every TX model comes equipped with a 14-inch central touchscreen with the latest Lexus control interface, complete with a volume knob. The base TX 350 features a 7-inch digital gauge cluster, while the Premium and Luxury trims are fitted with a 12.3-inch screen. The larger screen also comes standard in the hybrid models.

The base Lexus TX 350, starting at $55,050, includes features such as seven USB ports, wireless smartphone charging, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated front seats, multi-zone climate control, a 12-speaker audio system, a leather steering wheel, and simulated leather (“NuLuxe”) seats. The standard seven-passenger seating can be upgraded to second-row captain’s chairs with heating and ventilation, along with an easy sliding mechanism for improved third-row access.

Higher trim levels offer additional enhancements, including semi-aniline leather seats, a heads-up display, and a 21-speaker Mark Levinson audio system. Other optional features include automatic parking, a digital rearview camera, a digital key for smartphone access, and a range of connected services through Lexus’ Remote Connect subscription. The Lexus Safety System +3.0, which encompasses advanced driver-assist technologies, is included in every TX.

The demand for SUVs remains robust, leading Lexus to expand its utility vehicle offerings, with three of its seven models offering three rows of seating. The Lexus TX stands out as a balanced choice, combining car-like driving dynamics with minivan-like interior space, all within a sleek SUV design. It provides ample passenger and cargo accommodations, making it a compelling option for families.
