During the BRICS summit held in Johannesburg, South Africa, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for expanding the BRICS group of emerging economies. Xi emphasized building a fairer and more equitable international order, asserting that “hegemonism is not in China’s DNA.” These remarks were conveyed by Commerce Minister Wang Wentao, as President Xi did not attend the event.
In his address at a business forum, Xi highlighted China’s commitment to not engaging in great power competition or fostering bloc confrontation. He asserted China’s position on the right side of history, advocating for pursuing common good. Xi’s speech also underlined the significant changes occurring globally, presenting a crucial juncture for human society.
The summit, attended by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, did not see President Xi participate in person. However, Xi had previously met with host President Ramaphosa, discussing the new historical starting point for their countries.
The BRICS bloc, which currently includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, represents a significant portion of the world’s population and economy. Both China and Russia, facing sanctions from the United States, have shown interest in expanding BRICS to counter Western influence in international institutions and affairs. Countries like Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Iran, Argentina, and Egypt have expressed interest in joining the group.
Despite the push for expansion, there are differing views within BRICS regarding this growth, particularly from Brazil and India. Brazil’s President Lula, during a social media broadcast, clarified that BRICS does not aim to be a counterpoint to groups like the G7, G20, or the United States, but rather seeks to organize itself.
The summit’s agenda also includes discussions on enhancing the use of local currencies in trade and financial activities, reducing reliance on the US dollar. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who did not attend the summit in person, mentioned in a pre-recorded statement that the de-dollarization of BRICS’ economic ties is irreversible and gaining traction. Russia’s economy has been significantly impacted by Western sanctions due to the conflict in Ukraine. Putin is represented at the summit by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
