Eaton to Invest $340 Million in South Carolina Transformer Plant Retrofit

Eaton Corp. plc has announced plans to invest $340 million in retrofitting a brownfield site in Jonesville, South Carolina, to establish a manufacturing facility for electrical equipment. The facility will produce three-phase electrical transformers and is expected to contribute to the growing demand for power distribution infrastructure.

The 861,000-square-foot building, situated on a 54-acre site, previously served as a distribution center for a retail company. Eaton, an industrial manufacturer headquartered in Beachwood, Ohio, and incorporated in Ireland, plans to begin the bidding process for a contractor later this year. Production at the facility is projected to commence in 2027.

The company currently manufactures three-phase transformers at two plants in Wisconsin and produces single-phase, pole-mounted, and pad-mounted transformers in Texas. Eaton has been working to expand its manufacturing capabilities in response to extended lead times for electrical equipment in recent years. Since 2023, the company has invested over $1 billion in North American manufacturing to increase the production of power distribution equipment, electrical assemblies, and grid infrastructure components.

“Electrical power demand is increasing dramatically, and our solutions are at the heart of energy systems everywhere, from the utility grid to industrials, data centers, buildings, and more,” said Mike Yelton, Americas region president at Eaton.

The South Carolina Department of Commerce has approved job development credits for the project through its Coordinating Council for Economic Development. Additionally, the state has awarded a $10 million Rural Infrastructure Fund grant to Union County in support of the initiative.

Eaton currently operates 10 other facilities in South Carolina.
