Global trade in food has undergone remarkable growth over the past two decades, experiencing a staggering 350% increase from 2000 to 2021, with its total value soaring to $1.7 trillion. Presently, food accounts for approximately 8% of total merchandise trade worldwide, up from a 6% share in 2000.

Amidst this expansion, however, significant challenges persist, as evidenced by an estimated 783 million people grappling with hunger globally in 2022. While trade presents opportunities to enhance food accessibility, there is growing recognition of the need to scrutinize the health implications associated with the composition of food traded across borders.

Anu Peltola, the director of UNCTAD’s statistics service, points out that the nutritional quality of imported and exported foods varies considerably. Processed foods, such as canned fruits or vegetables, breakfast cereals, and pre-packaged meals, often contain elevated levels of sugars and salts, raising concerns about their impact on public health.

In response to these concerns, a collaborative effort between UNCTAD and the World Health Organization (WHO) has yielded a groundbreaking development: a new framework for analyzing global food trade. Released on March 7, the global trade matrix of processed food aims to offer insights into the economic, social, and health dimensions of food trade at both national and regional levels.

This innovative framework facilitates the identification of trends in processed food imports and exports, providing invaluable information for policymakers and stakeholders. For instance, a notable surge in imports of high-sugar, high-fat processed foods may serve as a red flag, signaling the imperative to intensify monitoring efforts to address public health risks like obesity, which has witnessed a marked increase in prevalence worldwide.

Moreover, the matrix offers a nuanced understanding of issues pertinent to food security and self-sufficiency in food production, particularly in regions where there is a growing dependence on imported processed foods.

Steve MacFeely, WHO’s Director of Data and Analytics, underscores the importance of categorizing processing types without inherently framing processing as detrimental. Instead, the emphasis lies on comprehending the dynamics of imported and exported foods, aligning with WHO’s overarching goal of promoting healthy and nutritious diets.

A comprehensive examination of global trends over the past two decades reveals intriguing insights. Developed economies have consistently exhibited a higher propensity to import processed food compared to their developing counterparts. Nonetheless, there exist noteworthy exceptions to this overarching trend.

Developed economies in Asia, for instance, have demonstrated a relatively lower reliance on processed food imports, with processed foods constituting 40% or less of their total food imports. Conversely, developing economies in Oceania, encompassing numerous vulnerable small island developing states, have showcased a heightened dependency on processed food imports, with processed foods accounting for more than 45% of their total food imports in some instances.

These insights gleaned from the matrix offer invaluable perspectives for policymakers and stakeholders seeking to address multifaceted challenges related to hunger, health, and food security on a global scale.
