The decision to allow a solar project on farmland in Yorkshire has sparked strong reactions from tenant farmers, with the Tenant Farmers Association (TFA) calling it a “crushing” move for those who rent land. The project, developed by Harmony Energy, will include a solar farm and battery storage facility on land owned by the Fitzwilliam Trust near Malton. The tenant farmers who currently cultivate this land have been actively campaigning for four years to halt the project, arguing that the development could undermine their livelihoods and disrupt agricultural practices on the land.
In addition to the challenges faced by tenant farmers, the fishing industry is also grappling with a growing labor shortage. There has been a noticeable decline in the number of workers coming from the European Union, and many seasoned fishermen are retiring without adequate replacements. To address this issue, South Devon College is working to attract new recruits to the industry. Recently, they hosted an event in collaboration with the charity Fishermen’s Mission, where experienced fishermen met with young individuals either considering or starting their careers at sea. This initiative aims to inspire the next generation of workers to step into a profession facing increasing challenges due to labor shortages.
Meanwhile, the agricultural sector continues to raise concerns about supply chain dynamics, with many farmers feeling that they bear too much of the risk without receiving fair compensation. To address these concerns, the Government has appointed an Agricultural Supply Chain Adjudicator. The adjudicator’s role is to enforce new regulations designed to improve transparency and fairness in the dairy sector, which has long been a point of contention. This move follows widespread calls for changes to the agricultural supply chain system, where farmers often struggle to secure fair prices for their produce. Looking ahead, similar regulations are expected to be implemented in the pig farming industry this spring, and further attention will be given to the supply chains for eggs and fresh produce in the near future.
The ongoing efforts to support the fishing industry, address tenant farming concerns, and improve agricultural supply chain fairness reflect the need for continued dialogue and action in these sectors to ensure that workers and farmers alike receive fair treatment and are equipped to face the challenges of the future.
