French shipping company CMA CGM has announced a major plan to invest $20 billion over the next four years to improve shipping and logistics in the United States. This news came from CEO Rodolphe Saadé during a meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House.
The investment aims to strengthen several key areas of U.S. shipping and logistics:
- Growing the U.S. Fleet: CMA CGM wants to increase its U.S.-registered ships from 10 to 30, helping its subsidiary, American President Lines (APL), become a top carrier for U.S. government shipments.
- Improving Port Facilities: The company plans to upgrade ports in important locations like New York, Los Angeles, Dutch Harbor, Houston, and Miami to make operations smoother and more reliable.
- Enhancing Warehousing and Logistics: Money will be invested in modern warehouses and logistics centers across the country to support the U.S. supply chain.
- Expanding Air Cargo Services: CMA CGM is looking to set up a big air cargo hub in Chicago, using five new Boeing 777 aircraft flown by American pilots, to support trade and improve connections.
This investment is expected to create around 10,000 new jobs in the U.S., highlighting CMA CGM’s commitment to the American market. It also aligns with the government’s goal to boost the U.S. maritime industry and reduce dependence on foreign shipbuilding.
President Trump welcomed the investment, noting its potential to strengthen U.S. shipping capabilities and enhance national security. He also mentioned plans for a new program to encourage domestic shipbuilding, showing a strategic move to increase U.S. involvement in global shipping.
CMA CGM’s investment plan breaks down as follows: $8 billion for container ships, $7 billion for logistics, $4 billion for ports, and $1 billion for air cargo. These efforts aim to improve the safety and reliability of the U.S. supply chain while reinforcing the country’s leadership in logistics.
Additionally, the company will create a new research and development center in Boston focused on advanced robotics and automation, partnering with top American tech firms to optimize logistics and provide better service to U.S. customers.
CMA CGM has been operating in the U.S. for 35 years, working in 40 states and employing 15,000 Americans. Each year, it ships over 5 million containers to and from the country.
This investment is a significant step in enhancing the U.S. shipping economy and modernizing its supply chain, positioning CMA CGM as a key player in America’s economic and security goals.
