China’s wine exports to Japan saw a significant increase of 255% in 2023, based on recent trade data from Japan’s Ministry of Finance. The value of these exports also rose by 189%, reflecting a growing acceptance of Chinese wines in the Japanese market. Over the past two years, Chinese wineries have expanded their presence in international markets, initially targeting regions with large Chinese populations like Hong Kong, Macau, and Singapore. Japan has now emerged as a key market, demonstrating notable growth.
According to data reported by Vino Joy News, the positive trend has continued this year. From January to August, the volume of bottled Chinese wine (in containers of 2 liters or less) exported to Japan reached 37,296 liters, up 117.84% from the same period in 2023. The export value also grew by 22.16% year-on-year to US$343,900. Japan now ranks as the fifth-largest market for Chinese wine exports, following Hong Kong, France, Macau, and Australia.
Forbes Japan recently highlighted Silver Heights, a Chinese winery that achieved biodynamic certification from Demeter. The winery has been exporting to Japan for five years, selling to luxury hotels and restaurants through its local partner. Silver Heights wines can be found in prestigious venues such as Mandarin Oriental, Conrad Tokyo, and Michelin-starred restaurants.
The winery’s CEO, Marco Milani, noted that Chinese wines are gaining attention among Japanese wine experts. He emphasized that Japan’s market is quality-driven, and producers offering clean, high-quality wines are well-received. Despite the international success of some Chinese wines, the volumes remain modest compared to domestic sales. Shen Yi, a wine industry professional, stated that while some wineries are expanding abroad, their primary focus remains on the domestic market. International sales, while increasing, still represent a smaller share of overall business.
