The China-Europe Railway Express (CRE) is increasingly recognized for its role in stabilizing global industrial and supply chains, according to Markus Bangen, CEO of Duisburger Hafen AG (Duisport), Europe’s largest inland port. In a recent interview, Bangen highlighted that the CRE mitigates the impact of various external factors, contributing significantly to the stability of global supply chains. Since its inception in 2011, the CRE has dispatched over 90,000 trains, connecting 224 cities across 25 European countries and complementing maritime transport, thereby enhancing links between China’s interior and major European hubs.
Bangen described the CRE as an innovative transportation model that has transformed traditional transport methods and opened new trade opportunities. The service has gained the trust of businesses and consumers, demonstrating its reliability in facilitating cross-Eurasian trade.
The importance of the CRE was underscored during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it remained a dependable transportation option amid disruptions in maritime and air transport. Currently, in light of international challenges affecting shipping routes, many companies are increasingly relying on the CRE to maintain stable supply chains. Recently, a new direct route from Chongqing to Duisburg was launched, enhancing the intermodal transport options between sea and rail. This route spans over 11,000 kilometers and further strengthens the Middle Corridor, which links China and Europe through several Central Asian and Southern Caucasian countries.
Bangen emphasized that the development of the Middle Corridor is essential for addressing customer needs and mitigating the impacts of geopolitical challenges on logistics. He also noted Turkey’s potential as a key hub along this route, offering substantial market demand and growth opportunities. With stable cargo volumes observed this year, Bangen expressed optimism for the future of the CRE, highlighting its potential for growth and the increasing recognition of Duisburg as a significant stop along the railway. The logistics sector has emerged as a vital part of Duisburg’s economy, generating employment and benefiting local businesses.
Duisport has fostered strong partnerships with the China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. and China Railway Container Transport Corp., Ltd. (CRCT), focusing on continuous improvement through effective communication.
