Following the conclusion of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28), nearly 200 countries have committed to transitioning away from fossil fuels, with nuclear energy emerging as a potential renewable energy source for some nations. However, the adoption of nuclear energy faces significant challenges, particularly in terms of public safety concerns and high costs, especially in the United States.

Yahoo Finance Senior Columnist Rick Newman discussed these challenges, highlighting the agreement made by 22 nations, led by the United States, at COP28. These countries pledged to increase nuclear power production by 300% by 2050. Despite nuclear energy’s advantages, such as safety, zero pollution during power generation, and efficiency, its adoption has been slower than advocates would like, mainly due to its high cost.

Despite subsidies for nuclear power in recent green energy acts, the industry still struggles to gain momentum. One of the main issues with renewable energy sources like wind and solar is the inability to effectively store power for later use. Nuclear power could serve as a reliable alternative to natural gas and coal when renewable sources are not available.

An interesting proposal mentioned by Newman is the idea of converting existing coal plant sites into nuclear facilities. This approach could utilize existing infrastructure and mitigate ‘not in my backyard’ concerns, as these sites are already established in non-residential areas.

Newman also addressed common safety concerns associated with nuclear energy, noting that modern nuclear technology is much safer and reactors are smaller than in the past. Despite historical incidents like Chernobyl, Fukushima, and Three Mile Island, the safety record of nuclear power, when considering air pollution and related health issues caused by fossil fuels, is relatively strong.

To make significant advancements in nuclear energy adoption, regulatory processes need to be updated to match new technological developments, and costs must be reduced. This might require additional government support and creative solutions in the transition to cleaner energy sources. Newman’s insights underscore the complexities and potential in harnessing nuclear energy as part of a broader strategy to combat climate change.
