Bangladesh Garment Industry Adopts Robotics and Tech to Enhance Efficiency

in Automation & Robotics, Industry

Bangladesh’s apparel industry, the second-largest exporter globally, is increasingly embracing automation and technological advancements to bolster productivity and competitiveness in the global market.

While Bangladesh may lag behind major Asian counterparts like China, Vietnam, and India in adopting advanced technologies, it is now making strides to integrate robotics and automation into its production facilities. This shift aims to reduce operational costs and improve overall factory efficiency.

Leading garment manufacturers such as DBL Group and Envoy Textile have made substantial investments in automation technologies. These investments enable remote monitoring of production processes, predictive maintenance, and quality control, placing Bangladesh’s garment industry on par with global competitors.

According to reports from the International Federation of Robotics, Asian countries, particularly China, Japan, the USA, Korea, and Germany, have made significant strides in industrial robot installations. Bangladesh, albeit at a nascent stage, is following suit, with a growing number of industrial robots being deployed across various sectors, including textiles.

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the garment industry face unique challenges but are also recognizing the importance of technology adoption for survival and growth. Some SMEs have invested in production monitoring devices and software solutions to enhance efficiency and reduce operational costs.

Despite the growing interest in automation, challenges such as mindset shifts and technical know-how hinder widespread adoption, particularly among SMEs. Access to financing for technology upgrades remains a concern, with limited availability of funds specifically tailored for SMEs.

The introduction of industrial robots in Bangladesh is gradually gaining momentum, with an estimated 100 robots currently in operation in the ready-made garment industry alone. Educational institutions are also offering courses and training programs on robotics and automation, indicating a growing interest and potential for further adoption.

Innovations such as IoT-enabled solutions and intelligent hanger systems are further revolutionizing production processes, enhancing efficiency, and reducing labor requirements. These technologies offer real-time monitoring and optimization capabilities, empowering manufacturers to make informed decisions and improve overall productivity.

While concerns about job displacement persist, industry leaders emphasize that technology adoption is essential for remaining competitive in the global market. Despite automation, some companies have seen an increase in employment due to rising demand, signaling potential opportunities for skilled workers in the evolving landscape.

Although challenges remain, the adoption of robotics and advanced technologies presents promising prospects for Bangladesh’s garment industry, positioning it for sustainable growth and competitiveness in the global marketplace.
