Discussions surrounding a prospective Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Australia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have shifted focus to the critical issue of increased flight capacity, presenting itself as a pivotal bargaining element for both parties. This development coincides with Flight Centre Corporate’s revelation of a notable surge in business travel from Australia to the UAE over the past six months (01 September 2023 – 23 February 2024), marking a 38 per cent increase compared to the corresponding period in 2022-23.

Melissa Elf, Chief Operating Officer of Flight Centre Global Corporate, emphasized the potential benefits of the agreement, particularly in fostering investment in Australia’s critical minerals and clean energy technology. However, Elf highlighted a crucial aspect requiring attention for the successful realization of the agreement. Elf remarked, “While there exists tremendous potential for Australian businesses in this prospective agreement, a key prerequisite must be addressed to ensure its effective implementation: adequate travel capacity.”

Citing data from FCM Travel and Corporate Traveller, Elf underscored the growing demand for travel to the UAE, yet emphasized a noticeable disparity in capacity. Flight numbers between Australia and the UAE currently stand at 77 per cent of pre-pandemic levels, a figure considerably lower than the country’s average international outbound rate of 98 per cent. Elf acknowledged recent efforts by airlines, such as Emirates’ plans to introduce additional aircraft seats between Brisbane and Dubai and Perth and Dubai, as a positive step towards addressing capacity constraints. However, she stressed the necessity for broader industry participation to meet and surpass pre-pandemic levels.

In addition to addressing FTA requirements, Elf emphasized the broader implications of increased flight capacity, including potential reductions in airfares for travelers bound for Europe via the Middle East. Furthermore, Elf highlighted shifts in travel trends between Australia and the UAE, noting a transition from education and sports-related travel to increased representation from the mining, oil, gas, and services sectors.

With discussions set to commence in Abu Dhabi, both nations anticipate finalizing the agreement by year-end. The UAE stands as Australia’s largest trade and investment partner in the Middle East, underscoring the significance of strengthened bilateral ties in fostering economic growth and cooperation. The potential benefits of the FTA extend beyond economic considerations, with both countries recognizing the strategic importance of enhanced cooperation in areas such as technology, innovation, and sustainability.

As negotiations progress, stakeholders remain optimistic about the prospects of a comprehensive agreement that addresses the diverse interests and priorities of both nations while fostering long-term prosperity and collaboration.
