Azerbaijan is making significant progress in its efforts to become a key player in green energy exports, with a confirmed renewable energy capacity exceeding 184 gigawatts (GW). The country is actively working on establishing a green energy corridor with Europe to enhance energy security. In 2022, a strategic partnership was signed in Bucharest between Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania, and Hungary. The collaboration aims to develop and transfer green energy, with plans to lay an electrical cable across the Black Sea. Spanning approximately 1,100 kilometers, this cable will enable the export of up to 4,000 megawatts of green energy to European markets.
Azerbaijan’s green energy potential, supported by a variety of renewable resources, could positively impact global energy markets. The construction of infrastructure and technological networks will be essential to support the export process. Regional cooperation is also crucial for increasing Azerbaijan’s green energy exports. Integration with neighboring energy markets, particularly in the South Caucasus, is expected to play a vital role in expanding export capabilities.
Government policies and legislative support are important factors in driving green energy export growth. Incentives and programs aimed at promoting renewable energy will further contribute to the development of the sector. In addition, state and international financial institutions are backing green energy projects, which will help attract investment and expand export opportunities. Trade agreements and energy exchange programs are expected to facilitate the export process and open up new markets.
Green energy exports not only contribute to environmental sustainability but also provide economic benefits for Azerbaijan, such as boosting foreign currency earnings and creating new jobs in the energy sector. With significant technical potential for both onshore and offshore renewable energy, Azerbaijan is positioning itself as a leading player in the global green energy market.
