The International Road Transport Union (IRU) marked the occasion of World Sustainable Transport Day on November 26, 2024, a day dedicated to promoting sustainable, safe, and accessible transport systems worldwide.
Sustainable transport is recognized for its significant role in fostering strong, inclusive communities and enabling access to essential services such as education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. It contributes to the economic growth of communities by providing jobs, supporting livelihoods, and reducing poverty, while also enhancing resilience against challenges such as climate change.
IRU Secretary General, Umberto de Pretto, expressed support for the day, highlighting the importance of collaboration between transport users, businesses, and governments to advance sustainability. He emphasized that trucks, vans, buses, coaches, and taxis are integral to connecting people and businesses across regions, making them essential to the development of sustainable transport solutions.
De Pretto added, “Road transport plays a crucial role in advancing the core pillars of sustainable development, ensuring connectivity and supporting economic activities across villages, towns, countries, and continents.”
The UN General Assembly designated World Sustainable Transport Day during its 77th session in May 2023, following a proposal by the government of Turkmenistan, supported by the IRU. The day serves as a platform for highlighting the importance of sustainable mobility and trade.
To support the observance, IRU has launched a dedicated World Sustainable Transport Day website, offering social media resources and tools to help raise awareness of the event.
