As the global electric vehicle (EV) market continues to grow, initiatives focused on battery recycling and the circular economy have become key components of the green transition. China, a leader in EV battery production, is expanding its efforts to develop a closed-loop supply chain for battery recycling.
This strategy not only addresses the challenge of resource scarcity but also provides China with a competitive advantage in the global green technology sector, positioning the country as a leader in the emerging circular economy. This economy focuses on practices like sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing, and recycling materials and products for as long as possible.
With critical materials for EV batteries, such as cobalt, lithium, and nickel, being limited and environmentally costly to extract, China has strengthened its position in the battery supply chain by securing substantial interests in cobalt mines in Africa and lithium sources in Latin America.
Beyond its control over raw materials, China is also focusing on developing a comprehensive battery recycling industry. This move aims to reduce dependence on newly mined minerals while minimizing the environmental impact of EV battery production.
