Flight Disruptions at Manila Airport Due to Unexplained Power Outage

Dozens of flights faced cancellations at the Philippines’s largest international airport, Ninoy Aquino International Airport, following an unexplained power outage at Terminal 3. Approximately 40 domestic Cebu Pacific flights were affected on Monday, leading to flight delays. While the cause of the power failure was not elaborated in the airport’s statement, Manila Electric Company, the airport’s operator, is investigating the incident.

Despite the power outage, partial functionality of airline and immigration computers allowed the processing of inbound and outbound passengers. Cebu Pacific, in response to the situation, provided affected passengers the option to rebook or receive a refund for future use in a travel fund.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr instructed Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista to swiftly restore normal power operations at Terminal 3, aiming to minimize the impact on affected passengers. The incident occurred during the Labor Day weekend, disrupting travel plans for Filipinos.

This power disruption is reminiscent of a similar incident in January, where a power outage at the country’s main gateway affected around 300 flights and 65,000 passengers. Ninoy Aquino International Airport has faced criticism, being ranked the world’s worst international airport for business-class travel in a previous ranking by Bounce, a California-based luggage storage app. The ranking cited a lack of facilities and a poor record of delays and cancellations.

In an effort to alleviate pressure on the main gateway, the Philippines is investing in multibillion-dollar airports in provinces surrounding Manila. Meanwhile, President Marcos Jr expressed commitment to addressing power outages in the central islands of Negros and Panay, where residents have faced extended blackouts.
