Intel introduced its latest Xeon server processors and a new laptop chip as part of its strategy to regain its foothold in the competitive data center market. The launch includes the company’s sixth generation Xeon chips, designed to enhance server efficiency and performance, especially in handling complex AI computations and other high-demand tasks. According to Mercury Research, Intel’s market share in the data center sector for x86 chips has seen a decline of 5.6 percentage points over the last year, currently standing at 76.4%. This shift has occurred as competitors, notably AMD, have increased their market presence to 23.6%. Intel attributes some of its market challenges to delays and issues with its manufacturing processes, which have been adjusted to improve performance and efficiency.
The newly released efficiency Xeon chip is already available, and the more robust performance model is expected to be released in the third quarter of this year. Intel plans to introduce additional variants next year. These chips promise significant reductions in the number of server racks needed compared to previous generations, aiming for a 67% decrease in hardware for the same computing power. Furthermore, Intel announced the pricing for its Gaudi 3 AI accelerator chips during a press briefing. The Gaudi 3 accelerator kit, which includes eight AI chips, is priced at approximately $125,000. This pricing strategy positions Intel’s offerings as a cost-effective alternative to Nvidia’s H100 chips, found in comparable server systems that can exceed $300,000.
Additionally, Intel disclosed information about its next-generation laptop processor, Lunar Lake, which is reported to use 40% less power while incorporating a more potent AI processor. This chip is slated for release in the third quarter. With these launches, Intel aims to strengthen its position in the data center market and expand its technological capabilities in AI and server efficiency.
