A newly completed £28 million, 237,000 square foot warehouse has been inaugurated at the Alexandra Dock in the Port of Liverpool. The multi-user facility, constructed over a 12-month period, is designed to handle and store a variety of commodities, including both unitized and non-unitized goods. The building is approximately 400 meters long, which is equivalent to five full-size football pitches.
The new warehouse features 300 meters of dedicated quayside, state-of-the-art cranes for vessel discharge, efficient HGV turnaround times, a vehicle wash bay, a separate office block, welfare facilities, weighbridges, and a marshalling cabin. The bulk storage capacity was fully booked prior to the completion of construction, with a significant portion allocated for grain, which was secured by importers during the construction phase.
The first shipment of grain was successfully offloaded on July 12, with a subsequent shipment arriving later in the month. When fully utilized, the facility can accommodate approximately 90,000 tonnes of cargo. The development aims to improve efficiency in warehousing and distribution, and enhance the port’s role in the UK logistics network.
An official from the construction company noted that multi-user facilities like this one are crucial for supporting the import and export of essential goods. They highlighted that the development aims to optimize supply chains, reduce road miles, and deliver cost, carbon, and congestion benefits, reinforcing the port’s significance in the logistics sector.
A spokesperson for the port authorities expressed satisfaction with the successful completion and full occupancy of the new warehouse. They pointed out that there is strong demand for port-based storage due to recent challenges impacting agriculture, which has increased the need for imported grain and animal feed. Investing in infrastructure to boost efficiency and reliability remains a priority, and the new facility is a testament to this commitment.
