Philippine exporters are getting ready for a proposed new rule from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that would require front-of-package nutrition labels on food products coming into the United States. This initiative aims to help consumers easily understand nutrition information by labeling levels of saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars as “Low,” “Medium,” or “High.”
Sergio Ortiz-Luis Jr., president of the Philippine Exporters Confederation Inc. (Philexport), pointed out that although the rule is still just a proposal, it could raise costs for local businesses that export to the U.S. He mentioned that exporters would need to use up their current packaging materials and invest in new ones to meet the potential requirements. Ortiz-Luis stressed the importance of waiting for the final decision and said that having time to prepare is crucial for exporters.
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has encouraged Philippine food exporters and those looking to enter the U.S. market to keep a close eye on this proposed rule. The DTI explained that the new Nutrition Info Box is meant to fit with current dietary guidelines, aiming to limit certain nutrients to help people maintain a healthy diet. They also pointed out that these new labeling rules could affect how products are packaged and how businesses comply.
Stakeholders have the chance to share their thoughts on the proposed rule with the U.S. FDA until May 16. This gives exporters and others interested a chance to raise concerns or ask questions before any final decisions are made.
As things progress, Philippine exporters are encouraged to stay updated and be proactive in adjusting their packaging and labeling to stay in line with potential new U.S. rules.
