A 61-year-old woman from the UK has admitted to pretending to be different people to cheat on the “Life in the UK” citizenship test for them. Speaking through a video link from Bronzefield Prison, Josephine Maurice told Snaresbrook Crown Court that she took the test for 13 different applicants between June 2022 and August 2023.
The “Life in the UK” test is required for anyone who wants to become a permanent resident or citizen. It has 24 questions that test knowledge about British history, values, and society. To trick the test center officials, Maurice used different disguises, including various wigs, to make herself look like both men and women.
When authorities searched her home in Enfield, north London, they found several fake documents and many wigs that she likely used for her scheme. She also admitted to having two driving licenses that belonged to other people and working with others to commit fraud.
Phillip Parr, an inspector with the Home Office, said that Maurice planned this carefully to avoid getting caught by choosing different disguises and test locations all over the country. He suggested that she was motivated by money.
Maurice is currently in custody, and her sentencing will take place on May 20.
