Walmart’s introduction of an affordable alternative to the iconic Hermès Birkin bag has garnered significant attention, with the dupe priced between $78 and $100. This budget-friendly option, which has sold out in several colors, offers shoppers a chance to own a bag resembling the luxury item, which typically starts at $10,000 and can reach over $400,000 for rare editions at auctions.
The Birkin, long a symbol of exclusivity and wealth, has been a favorite among celebrities such as the Kardashians and Victoria Beckham. However, Walmart’s replica has raised concerns in the fashion industry.
Concerns Over Brand Dilution
Michael Mack, a Las Vegas-based luxury reseller, expressed concerns about the impact of replicas on the prestige of high-end brands. “Imitation bags like this blur the lines and can ultimately undermine the craftsmanship and exclusivity that make iconic designs like the Birkin so special,” Mack said.
Jennifer Johnson, founder of True Fashionistas, a lifestyle resale store in Florida, echoed these thoughts, arguing that while the Walmart dupe allows more people to experience luxury-style accessories, it could dilute the value of genuine luxury items. “Having dupes flood the market erodes the exclusivity that these brands have carefully cultivated,” Johnson noted.
A Different Perspective on Dupes
Ben Schreiber, CMO at Latico Leathers, offered a different viewpoint, seeing the Birkin dupe as a recognition of the cultural significance of luxury fashion. “If the Birkin weren’t significant, no one would bother creating a knockoff,” Schreiber said, noting that while such products may spark interest, they also compel luxury brands to focus more on their unique craftsmanship and storytelling.
Legal and Financial Risks for Walmart
Walmart’s Birkin-inspired bag, marketed under names like “KAMUGO Genuine Leather Handbags Purse for Women,” closely resembles the original in design, including features like a gold lock and studded bottom. However, experts warn that the bag’s resemblance to the Hermès Birkin could pose legal risks. Rania Sedhom, managing partner at Sedhom Law Group, highlighted the legal protections surrounding the Birkin bag, noting that the shape, logo, and materials of the Birkin are trademarked and protected under design patents. “Walmart could face legal challenges if it is found to have infringed on these protections,” Sedhom cautioned.
Social Media Attention
The dupe has become a topic of discussion on social media platforms, with influencers and celebrities, including TV personality Bethenny Frankel, commenting on the product. Frankel’s TikTok video, which praised the dupe for providing an affordable way for people to experience the Hermès aesthetic, has garnered millions of views.
The debate surrounding the Walmart Birkin dupe reflects broader conversations about the intersection of luxury fashion and accessibility, with some users expressing excitement about the affordable option and others emphasizing the importance of exclusivity in luxury goods.
