Recent adjustments to UPS’ SurePost service are prompting shippers to explore alternative solutions, though shifting volume may be difficult for some. As of January 1, UPS has brought all SurePost deliveries in-house, ending its partnership with the U.S. Postal Service for final-mile deliveries. This change has redirected millions of packages back into UPS’ network, leading to modifications in SurePost’s delivery coverage and transit times.
The new system no longer supports deliveries to PO Boxes or addresses outside the contiguous U.S. Transit times have been adjusted to an estimated two to six days within the contiguous U.S., compared to the previous two to seven days when the Postal Service was involved.
In addition to these operational changes, UPS implemented rate increases and delivery area surcharges for SurePost on January 13. As a result, many shippers are re-evaluating their options. However, transitioning away from SurePost may prove challenging, particularly for larger shippers bound by contracts with minimum volume and spending requirements. These contracts, which may have initially provided cost savings, could now expose shippers to rate increases and penalties if they fail to meet their minimum volume obligations.
Shippers must now carefully assess the financial impact of these changes, including potential penalties for breaking contracts versus the increased costs of using SurePost. For those seeking alternatives, viable options include FedEx’s Ground Economy service and the U.S. Postal Service’s Ground Advantage. In certain cases, package consolidators like DHL eCommerce and OSM Worldwide, which handle parcel sorting and handoff to the Postal Service for final-mile delivery, may offer cost-effective alternatives.
Despite these challenges, SurePost remains a feasible option for many shippers. The long-term effects, particularly concerning pricing, remain uncertain as UPS continues to integrate the changes into its service portfolio.
