In January 2025, U.S. beef exports experienced an increase compared to the same period last year, while pork exports saw a modest decline, according to data from the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF).
Beef Exports
Total beef exports for January reached 102,840 metric tons (mt), marking a 3% increase from January 2024. The export value also rose by 5%, totaling $804.6 million. This growth was driven by larger exports to markets such as China and Canada, with exports to South Korea remaining steady in volume but higher in value. Notably, exports of beef variety meats were the largest in nearly two years, led by larger shipments to Mexico, Egypt, Canada, and China/Hong Kong.
Pork Exports
Conversely, pork exports in January totaled 243,965 mt, representing a 3% decrease from the previous year. The export value declined by 4% to $644 million. Despite this overall decrease, exports to Mexico continued to climb, increasing by 2% to 104,502 mt, with the value jumping 7% to $222 million. Mexico accounts for about half of U.S. ham production and more than 10% of total U.S. pork production. However, shipments declined to markets such as Japan and South Korea.
Market Analysis
The mixed performance of U.S. meat exports in January reflects varying demand across international markets. The increase in beef exports, particularly to Asian markets, suggests a strong demand for U.S. beef products. In contrast, the slight decline in pork exports indicates challenges in certain markets, despite robust demand from Mexico. USMEF President and CEO Dan Halstrom noted that while demand for U.S. beef remained strong in Asian markets, the pork industry faced heightened competition from countries like Brazil.
Overall, the data indicates a positive trend for U.S. beef exports, while highlighting areas for potential growth and diversification in the pork export market.
