Walmart is set to increase its drone delivery operations in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, a region that has become central to the company’s drone delivery initiatives. The expansion follows the initial launch of drone services in partnership with DroneUp in 2022 and the introduction of delivery services with Wing in two cities in the area last August, initially reaching 60,000 homes.
The company attributes this expansion to recent exemptions granted by the Federal Aviation Administration to Wing and Zipline. These exemptions allow for drone flights beyond the visual line of sight of an observer, a critical factor in broadening the service in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
With the expansion, the delivery radius from Walmart stores offering this service will increase to up to 10 miles, a significant extension from the initial 6-mile range. This service enables customers to order a wide range of items, including household essentials and groceries, through Wing and Zipline’s platforms.
Adam Woodworth, CEO of Wing, announced in a blog post on their website that new drone delivery locations with Walmart are set to launch in the coming months, with completion expected within the year.
Similarly, Zipline, which is currently providing delivery services at a Walmart location in Pea Ridge, Arkansas, plans to start integrating drone deliveries into Dallas-Fort Worth area Walmart stores later this year. This integration will follow a pilot phase, as stated by Zipline’s co-founder and CEO Keller Rinaudo Cliffton in an article on their website. Cliffton envisions serving millions of Dallas residents with Zipline’s drone delivery service, aiming for thousands of deliveries daily, which he likened to “teleportation.”
