Risky Side of AI Implementation in Warehousing: What Supply Chain Leaders Need to Know

In the aftermath of a two-year supply chain crisis that significantly affected global operations, there’s a growing urgency to fortify inventory management systems, making them more adaptable, robust, and reliable. Numerous companies are turning to artificial intelligence (AI) as a viable solution to address these challenges.

The integration of AI technology is projected to contribute $1.3 trillion to the global economy over the next two decades by augmenting supply chain efficiency. Forecasts indicate a substantial surge in global spending in this area, expected to escalate from $1.67 billion in 2018 to $12.44 billion in 2024.

AI-driven innovations are becoming increasingly pivotal at every stage of inventory management, spanning from factory floors to warehouses, cargo ships, point-of-sale systems, and transportation vehicles. Computers equipped with AI are adept at collecting and processing extensive volumes of data.

Contrary to a mere mechanized approach, the application of AI in inventory management involves machine learning. These AI-enabled machines utilize sophisticated software employing advanced analysis and logic-based techniques to comprehend real-world situations. Interacting with other computer systems, they deploy intelligent algorithms to analyze scenarios, formulate responses, make decisions, and take proactive measures.

Impact of AI Technology on Inventory Management

Effective inventory management transcends merely shipping products to customers; it involves having inventory ready even before customer orders, demanding precise forecasting. Overstocking leads to revenue loss, while understocking results in shortages and dissatisfied customers.

AI software is instrumental in analyzing consumer demand for specific products with accuracy, responding to evolving trends, accommodating seasonal fluctuations, and considering region-specific demand while managing inventory. Algorithms, by scrutinizing millions of purchases, can predict whether items will have high demand or end up stagnant in storage.

The technology empowers businesses to stay ahead in the game by enabling real-time demand-based inventory ordering instead of relying on predictive stocking. Enhanced efficiency in inventory management facilitates increased customer satisfaction while reducing expenses.

When inventory levels deplete, AI-driven technology swiftly connects businesses with available suppliers. By maintaining an updated database of a business’s suppliers and current stock, the technology can swiftly analyze orders based on multiple parameters like cost, delivery speed, and reliability, suggesting the optimal supplier within seconds.

Streamlining Warehouse Operations

The latest innovations in the supply chain are witnessed in “dark warehouses”—fully automated storage facilities functioning without human intervention. In these facilities, automated machinery like self-driving forklifts, conveyor belts, and palletizers continue operations uninterrupted, updating inventory in real-time through barcode scanning.

By eliminating human involvement, warehouses enhance both speed and efficiency, operating continuously without the limitations of shift changes, breaks, or human errors. These dark warehouses operate 24/7 without the need for extensive heating or air conditioning.

AI technology optimizes every aspect of warehouse management, predicting storage duration for each item. It strategizes the placement of items, stocking those with longer storage periods towards the back and readily accessible ones at the front. Although seemingly minor, these adjustments significantly enhance overall efficiency across numerous orders.

Even warehouses not transitioning entirely to dark operations are witnessing increased integration of AI technology. More storage facilities are aligning their processes with automated conveyor systems and order retrieval technologies to meet burgeoning demand.

Optimizing the Shipping Process

AI technology tracks goods leaving warehouses to the final stage of the supply chain. Modern last-mile courier services, supported by innovative technology, ensure delivery within next-day, same-day, and even hourly windows.

Sophisticated AI software simplifies city maps into nodes and vertices using graph theory, considering traffic conditions and integrating with information systems to track emerging traffic situations.

Algorithms amalgamate available traffic information with delivery destinations, devising efficient pickup and drop-off schedules for drivers. It swiftly generates shipping routes balancing speed and cost-effectiveness. Real-time GPS tracking enables constant visibility and immediate updates for both retailers and customers throughout the shipping process.

Presently, AI remains an advanced auxiliary tool. However, the imminent future may witness autonomous vehicles assuming full control of the shipping process.

The ongoing advancements in AI technology are transforming every facet of inventory management. Through innovative solutions in stocking, storing, and shipping products, companies are witnessing amplified revenue generation and heightened customer satisfaction.
