Asia Tokyo Traders Await Inflation Data Amidst Wall Street Rally

Looking ahead in Asian markets for the reopening of Tokyo markets on Tuesday after an extended weekend, investors will be focusing on consumer price and spending data. They must also assess the impact of the robust tech-driven rally on Wall Street, following Friday’s directionless trading.

The Nikkei 225 index closed up 0.27% on Friday, remaining less than 1% below the 33-year high close recorded in December. Tokyo traders will rely on cues from Japan’s December household spending and the Tokyo Consumer Price Index.

South Korea’s benchmark KOSPI fell 0.40% on Monday, while China’s blue-chip index hit its lowest level in almost five years. Hong Kong stocks experienced a roughly 2% decline, influenced by rising geopolitical tensions ahead of Taiwan’s elections on Saturday and reduced confidence in Beijing’s economy.

In contrast, Wall Street witnessed positive momentum, with the Nasdaq and S&P 500 surging due to megacap and chip stocks. However, Boeing’s slide, which pressured the Dow, followed the U.S. order to temporarily ground some 737 MAX 9 jets fitted with a panel that detached from an Alaska Air Group jet midair on Friday.

Japan’s Sony is reportedly abandoning the merger of its Indian unit with Zee Entertainment, over disagreements about leadership of the $10 billion entity.

The dollar/yen declined in U.S. trade, dropping 0.35%. Investors continued to analyze mixed signals from Friday’s U.S. jobs and service sector data, with a focus on Thursday’s crucial inflation reading as Federal Reserve policymakers contemplate potential rate cuts.

The Bank of Japan is anticipated to stand out this year by raising rates from negative territory. However, Japan’s interest rates are expected to remain below those of other major economies. Last week’s 7.6 magnitude earthquake may further hinder Japan’s economic recovery and inflation goals.
