Northvolt, a key player in the Swedish battery industry, has stated that it imports important parts for making its batteries, even though it promotes itself as Europe’s first large-scale battery factory. The company has shared that it gets cathode active materials from countries like China, Japan, South Korea, and Sweden.
This statement comes after Swedish broadcaster SVT looked into Northvolt’s operations and found that the company was struggling to produce these materials at its factory in Skellefteå, which led them to depend on outside suppliers. In response, Northvolt updated its website to confirm that it has paused its in-house production but stressed that its products are still more environmentally friendly than many of its competitors.
In addition to operational challenges, Northvolt has faced financial troubles. The company recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and announced plans to sell its industrial battery division in Poland to Scania. Despite these issues, Northvolt is still focused on achieving its sustainability goals.
Earlier, in November 2023, Northvolt announced the creation of a new type of battery that doesn’t use lithium, called a sodium-ion battery. This was an effort to lessen reliance on scarce materials and provide a more sustainable and cost-effective option for energy storage. The prototype was developed in Northvolt’s labs in Västerås, Sweden, and is meant for electricity storage plants, with potential uses in electric vehicles, such as scooters. At that time, the company pointed out that this new battery didn’t require critical raw materials like lithium, nickel, graphite, or cobalt, which mainly come from regions like China.
Despite the hurdles in making cathode materials and the financial difficulties, Northvolt continues to prioritize innovation and sustainability in the battery sector. The company aims to tackle supply chain issues and environmental concerns linked to battery production.
