The Sullivan County Commissioners have approved AECOM Technical Services, Inc. to create the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Action Plan. This decision came after a careful examination of six proposals, with AECOM being chosen as the best fit both in qualifications and cost.
The SS4A program, which is part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, has set aside $5 billion over five years (2022-2026) to help local communities, regions, and Tribal organizations work on initiatives that aim to reduce deaths and serious injuries on the roads. Sullivan County’s project has received $340,000 for this work, with 80% of the funding ($272,000) coming from the Federal Highway Administration. The county will cover the remaining 20% through cash and in-kind support from Sullivan County and its local partners.
County Administrator Derek Ferland stressed the need for an action plan to access additional federal funds for future projects. He mentioned that the plan, named “Safer Roads for Sullivan County,” is needed to secure more federal funding for road and intersection upgrades and other safety improvements.
Commission Chair Bennie Nelson pointed out that this initiative could greatly benefit local areas, stating, “This kind of opens the door for municipalities to access more money.” The action plan will focus on regions with high numbers of fatal accidents and serious injuries, as well as incidents involving cyclists and pedestrians, which will be advantageous for many towns in the county.
The SS4A program still has significant funding available, with nearly $2 billion ready for future projects aimed at improving roadway safety across the country.
