Staples has integrated RightHand Robotics’ RightPick system across its fulfillment centers, marking a significant advancement in its operational capabilities over the last three years. The collaboration between Staples and RightHand Robotics has led to substantial improvements in the RightPick system, allowing it to handle a diverse range of products from markers and coffee containers to reams of paper, according to statements made to Supply Chain Dive.
The enhancements include upgrades to the machine vision system and RightPick AI, the introduction of new picking and grasping strategies, and the development of advanced multipick and exception handling features. These improvements have not only expanded the variety of items the system can manage by two-fold but have also decreased the need for human intervention by 80%.
Beyond active order fulfillment, the technology is utilized to increase overall operational efficiency. The robotic arms engage in continuous learning by practicing picking processes on thousands of items, mirroring human learning processes, as mentioned in a LinkedIn post by a Staples representative. These technological advancements are part of Staples’ broader strategy to improve customer service by reducing delivery times. The RightPick system is a key component in Staples’ aim to provide next-day delivery services to over 98% of the U.S. population.
In addition to leveraging robotics technology, Staples has expanded its delivery options through partnerships with DoorDash and Instacart, offering same-day delivery services from nearly 1,000 U.S. stores since August 2023 and initiating a same-day delivery service with Instacart in 2020. These initiatives reflect Staples’ commitment to enhancing efficiency and meeting the evolving needs of its customers.
