Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, a renowned confectionary producer, has recently outsourced its final product packaging operations. This strategic shift, described as both challenging and essential by CEO Sarlls, was expedited in response to a labor shortage, particularly felt during the critical holiday season.
The company, facing production constraints at its Durango facility, witnessed a decline in total revenue for the quarter ending November 30. Year-over-year revenue dropped from $8.8 million to $7.7 million, with an estimated loss of approximately $1 million in sales due to these constraints.
However, the transition to outsourcing packaging to Utah has shown positive signs. It has notably freed up production capacity at the Durango facility. In December, the company reported a near 50% increase in the production of premium chocolate products compared to the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2023. According to Sarlls, this increase is attributable to the alleviated labor pressure in Durango, allowing the production team to focus more effectively on crafting high-quality chocolates and confectionery items.
Sarlls also noted that this outsourcing move aligns with Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory’s long-term strategy for growth and profitability. By utilizing a co-packer, the company can better match packaging capacity with increasing product volumes. The Durango packing operation, which previously required 15 to 50 staff members, particularly during peak holiday periods, will now see more efficient allocation of labor resources.
Additionally, Sarlls highlighted the potential benefits for e-commerce operations. The new arrangement is expected to enhance the company’s ability to meet online demand without the limitations imposed by labor constraints in boxed chocolate production.
