On February 17, 2025, South Korea and the Czech Republic held their second meeting focused on supply chain and energy cooperation in Seoul. The goal was to improve ties in areas like trade, clean energy, and nuclear power development.
The talks were led by South Korea’s Industry Minister, Ahn Duk-geun, and the Czech Republic’s Minister for Industry and Trade, Lukas Vlcek. They reviewed the progress of discussions about a proposal from a Korean group to build two nuclear power plants in Dukovany, a town in southern Czech Republic. This group, led by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), is working to finalize a deal for the project, which is expected to cost around 24 trillion won (about $16.6 billion), with hopes to complete it by March.
Minister Vlcek expressed confidence that they could reach an agreement soon, noting the project’s significance as the largest investment ever in the Czech Republic.
Aside from nuclear power, the ministers talked about the possibility of joint research and development in the nuclear field and other areas. They also discussed creating centers to focus on batteries, future transportation, and robotics.
Additionally, they signed an agreement to work together in the semiconductor industry and to develop clean hydrogen energy technologies. A business conference was held alongside the meeting to promote investment opportunities between the two countries.
Minister Ahn pointed out that 2025 marks the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 10th anniversary of their strategic partnership. He expressed hope that successfully launching the Dukovany nuclear power project would take their relationship to new heights.
This meeting highlights both countries’ commitment to enhancing cooperation in key industries, which aims to boost economic growth and energy security.
