Port Houston experienced a 2% decrease in cargo volumes year-over-year in October, handling a total of 366,208 TEUs, as per the latest port press release. However, despite this overall dip, the port witnessed a significant 6% increase in loaded exports, marking its largest month in this category to date.
This notable increase in loaded exports coincides with the recent completion of Wharf 6 at the Bayport Container Terminal, which has now become operational. The new berth, equipped with three Neo-Panamax “ship to shore” cranes, is designed to expand capacity for both import and export customers, enhancing the port’s operational capabilities.
In comparison to previous periods, Port Houston’s volumes showed an upward trend. There was a 12% rise in volumes compared to September 2023 and a substantial 42% increase relative to October 2019.
The data also revealed significant growth in import and export loads compared to 2019 figures. Import loads in the same period were 58% higher than in 2019, while export loads saw a 15% increase. These figures underscore the port’s evolving dynamics and its critical role in facilitating international trade, despite the slight annual decline in overall cargo volumes.
