As wildfires become an increasing concern in Oregon, the Sandy-based nonprofit AntFarm is stepping up with their Community Wildfire Defense Program. This initiative is designed to help communities along the Highway 26 corridor on Mount Hood’s western slope. AntFarm is working on creating wildfire defense plans, offering fire-risk assessments for property owners, and carrying out fuel reduction strategies such as brush clearing and removing dead trees.
In partnership with LeafcutterPNW, AntFarm also provides valuable job training for young people in forestry and wildfire prevention. These enthusiastic participants learn essential skills, including operating chainsaws and chippers, as well as tree climbing techniques, all while following important safety guidelines.
Through these proactive efforts, AntFarm aims to lower wildfire risks in the forested neighborhoods of Mount Hood, where dense trees and interlocking branches can make fires spread quickly. By reducing flammable materials near homes and infrastructure, the nonprofit is dedicated to enhancing community safety and preparedness for future wildfires.
