China has put a temporary halt on soybean imports from five exporters in Brazil because they didn’t meet certain plant health requirements. This pause started on January 8 and 14 and will last for two months. It affects well-known global traders like Cargill, ADM, and Olam, along with local companies C.Vale and Terra Roxa. Together, these businesses made up over 30% of Brazil’s soybean exports to China in 2024. However, other export activities by these companies will continue as usual. Brazilian officials are looking into the situation and plan to clarify things with China.
Brazil is expected to see a big increase in soybean exports as the harvesting season moves forward, with China being the largest buyer of Brazilian soybeans. Overall, this suspension is not likely to have a major impact on total export volumes since only a small share of shipments is affected.
