Niger’s Prime Minister Raises Concerns Over Trade Dispute with Benin, Citing Potential Violations of Trade Agreements

Niger’s Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine expressed grave concerns on Saturday regarding the ongoing blockade imposed by Benin on its oil exports, suggesting potential violations of longstanding trade agreements between the two nations and Niamey’s Chinese partners. In a statement that added further complexity to the already strained relations, Zeine underscored the security challenges hindering the full reopening of Niger’s border with Benin.

In response, officials in Cotonou reiterated their stance, emphasizing that they would only reconsider their position once Niamey reciprocated by allowing goods from Benin to enter its territory and normalized diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The blockade has significant implications for Niger’s ambitious plans to kickstart crude oil exports to China under a monumental $400 million agreement. Central to this endeavor is a sprawling 2,000-kilometer-long pipeline constructed by Chinese entities, linking Niger’s Agadem oil field to Benin’s port in the capital.

The recent discord between Niamey and Cotonou stems from the aftermath of a military coup in Niger last year, which led to widespread condemnation and diplomatic fallout. In response, Benin, alongside the West African regional bloc (ECOWAS), swiftly imposed a series of stringent sanctions on Niger, including the closure of borders, in a concerted effort to pressure the military junta to relinquish power and restore democratic governance.

While some of these sanctions were cautiously eased in February, Niger has remained resolute in its decision not to reopen its land border to goods originating from Benin, exacerbating tensions between the two nations.

The ongoing standoff underscores the complex interplay of geopolitical dynamics and regional alliances in West Africa, as well as the intricate economic dependencies that underpin bilateral relationships. As both countries navigate this delicate diplomatic impasse, the broader implications for trade and regional stability remain uncertain.
