NASA, the United States federal space agency, has chosen Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos’s aerospace company, to construct a spacecraft as part of the Artemis program, NASA’s initiative for lunar exploration. The contract, valued at approximately $3.4 billion, involves Blue Origin designing, testing, and developing a “lander” that will transport astronauts to and from the moon’s surface.

In an official statement released on Friday, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating, “Today we are excited to announce Blue Origin will build a human landing system as NASA’s second provider to deliver Artemis astronauts to the lunar surface.”

Under the terms of the contract, Blue Origin is required to conduct a demonstration of an uncrewed mission to the moon, followed by a crewed voyage that will see astronauts landing on the lunar surface in 2029.

This announcement comes amid increased involvement of private companies in space activities, with entities like Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin actively competing for valuable government contracts. In April 2021, NASA awarded SpaceX a $2.89 billion contract to develop a human landing system for the Artemis program.

Blue Origin, previously unsuccessful in securing certain contracts, will collaborate with Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Draper (a spacecraft software firm), and Astrobotic (a robotics company) to build a 16-meter tall lunar lander. This partnership is a crucial milestone for Blue Origin, and the company aims to contribute to NASA’s efforts to land astronauts on the moon, emphasizing the goal of establishing a more permanent lunar presence.

Jeff Bezos, in response to the announcement, expressed his honor to be part of the journey with NASA to land astronauts on the moon, emphasizing the commitment to a sustained lunar presence.
