Recent developments in Mexico have led to significant shifts in the aluminium supply chain, affecting premiums and various sectors. Fernando Garcia Martinez, Vice President of Operations at the Mexican aluminium institute IMEDAL, highlighted the widespread impact on the industry, noting rising premiums not only in Mexico but also in the United States.

Fastmarkets reported a rise in the daily assessment of the aluminium P1020A premium, ddp Midwest US, indicating a 3.70% increase on Thursday, May 2. This surge reflects the disruptions caused by recent tariff announcements.

According to Garcia Martinez, sectors such as auto parts, air conditioning, and extrusions are facing temporary closures due to the tariff implications. Of particular concern is the potential backlash from automakers if contracted volumes are not met.

The unexpected nature of the tariff announcement has left many industry players in shock. Garcia Martinez emphasized the need for dialogue with authorities to find a resolution, attributing the situation to intense pressure for trade monitoring in Mexico.

While US imports from Mexico are exempt from Section 232 tariffs under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), Mexico is required to implement stricter monitoring measures and enhance trade data reporting. This has resulted in increased import duties on various goods, including aluminium, ranging from 20% to 35%.

The rationale behind the tariffs, as outlined in the decree, is to ensure fair market conditions and provide certainty to vulnerable sectors of the national industry. However, concerns have been raised regarding potential consequences, including loss of competitiveness and higher prices for consumers.

IMEDAL has urged the Mexican government to reconsider the tariffs on aluminium, citing the country’s reliance on imports and potential repercussions for various industries. The tariffs could disrupt supply chains, affecting sectors such as appliances, construction, and automobiles.

Market participants have expressed confusion and uncertainty regarding the impact of the tariffs. Speculation abounds regarding the IMMEX program rules and the implications for trade flows. The IMMEX program allows foreign manufacturers to export raw materials and components into Mexico tax and duty-free, with the condition that finished goods are exported within a specified timeframe.

Traders from various regions have voiced concerns over the tariffs’ implications on trade dynamics and pricing. While some anticipate shifts in export destinations, others emphasize the need for clarity and understanding of the tariff’s scope.

Amidst the uncertainty, stakeholders await further clarification on the tariff implementation and its potential ramifications on the aluminium market. The situation underscores the complexity of international trade dynamics and the importance of transparent and well-defined trade policies.
