Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), a prominent Japanese shipping company, has announced the acquisition of LBC Tank Terminals (LBC), a leading independent tank terminal operator specializing in chemical storage. The agreement, finalized on March 7, 2025, involves MOL purchasing 100% of LBC’s membership rights from its current owners—Ardian, APG, and PGGM—for approximately $1.7 billion.
LBC operates seven terminals located in key chemical hubs across Europe and the United States, including Antwerp, Rotterdam, Houston, Freeport, and Baton Rouge. These facilities collectively offer a storage capacity of about 3 million cubic meters and are equipped with berth facilities, pipelines, and loading capabilities for rail and truck transport. This infrastructure supports the supply chains of various chemical manufacturers and energy companies by providing essential storage services at major shipping and arrival ports.
This acquisition aligns with MOL’s strategic objective to strengthen its chemical logistics business. The company has previously expanded its chemical tanker operations by acquiring shares in Nordic Tankers in 2019 and Fairfield Chemical Carriers in 2024, resulting in one of the largest chemical tanker fleets globally. By integrating LBC’s onshore storage capabilities, MOL aims to offer a comprehensive chemical logistics service that includes maritime transport and small-lot deliveries using tank containers.
Furthermore, with the anticipated increase in demand for transporting ammonia and CO₂ in a decarbonizing society, MOL plans to leverage LBC’s strategically located terminals to develop infrastructure supporting the energy transition. This move is expected to enhance MOL’s position in the global chemical logistics industry and advance its long-term growth and sustainability objectives.
The completion of this transaction is subject to obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals, with the closing expected within three to four months.
