Musingika Tourism Company Limited has announced the launch of two significant initiatives aimed at tackling climate change while promoting sustainable tourism in Uganda. The Clean Cooking Technologies Initiative and the Green Hotel Initiative are designed to enhance energy efficiency and environmental conservation in and around Uganda’s renowned tourist attractions, including Rwenzori Mountains National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park.
The Clean Cooking Technologies Initiative, developed in partnership with LAWSEB Energy Company Limited and RARTA Energy and Waste Solutions Uganda, focuses on promoting clean cooking methods among communities living near biodiversity hotspots. This initiative aims to foster a healthier environment and mitigate the negative impacts of traditional cooking methods. “The adoption of clean cooking technologies is essential for reducing deforestation and air pollution, which are critical to preserving Uganda’s natural beauty and biodiversity,” stated Kameli Zephaniia Bwambale, CEO of Musingika Tourism Company. “By empowering local communities to transition to cleaner alternatives, we are taking an important step towards sustainability that benefits both the environment and the local economy.”
In collaboration with the Rwenzori Albertine Regional Trade Association (RARTA) and the Kasese Hoteliers Association (KHA), Musingika has also launched the Green Hotel Initiative. This initiative aims to promote sustainability in the hospitality sector through innovative practices, including the implementation of the Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative (HCMI). This standardized methodology helps hotel operators calculate their carbon footprint. “The HCMI is a game-changer for hotels looking to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions,” said James Acakara. “By assessing their carbon impact, these businesses can make informed decisions to support tourism in a more environmentally sustainable manner.”
Additionally, Musingika has partnered with the Association of World Heritage Ambassadors in Uganda (AWOHA Uganda) to establish the Uganda Climate Change Academy. This project aims to enhance the resilience of farmers in tourism destinations through sustainable agricultural practices. The academy plans to train over 5,570 farmers on climate adaptations and promote renewable energy adoption and income diversification among smallholder coffee farmers. “This initiative is about equipping farmers with the tools and knowledge they need to thrive in the face of climate challenges,” noted Kajubi Sadai, Sustainability Manager of Musingika Tourism Company.
As part of its commitment to responsible tourism, Musingika has also introduced a Carbon Offset and Regenerative Ecotourism Initiative. This program allows tourists to mitigate their carbon footprint through travel packages that fund renewable energy projects and tree-planting initiatives. The company is currently managing 150 acres of reforestation in Bughalitsa Village, Kasese district. “We recognize our responsibility to offset the environmental impacts associated with tourism,” shared CEO Kameli Zephaniia Bwambale. “This initiative reflects our commitment to creating a regenerative approach to ecotourism that aligns with global sustainability goals.”
Musingika Tourism Company Limited remains dedicated to providing travel experiences that not only highlight Uganda’s stunning landscapes but also promote sustainable development and support local communities. By investing in clean energy, reforestation efforts, and responsible tourism practices, Musingika aims to address climate change and foster a greener future for Uganda.
