LinkedIn Announces Workforce Reduction and App Closure in Response to Market Changes

LinkedIn, the professional networking platform, has revealed plans to cut over 700 jobs and discontinue its job-seeking app in China, according to a letter from CEO Ryan Roslansky to employees on Monday. The decision comes in light of slowing revenue growth and evolving customer behavior.

Roslansky explained that the restructuring involves eliminating 716 positions, shutting down the job-hunting app in China, creating 250 new roles, integrating some teams, and streamlining management roles to enhance decision-making efficiency.

“As we turn 20, we are entering a new decade for LinkedIn, one that will perhaps be the most consequential we’ve experienced to date,” said Roslansky, highlighting the impact of artificial intelligence on the global economy and the labor market. He emphasized LinkedIn’s role in helping members and customers navigate these changes for economic opportunities.

These job cuts are part of a broader trend in the tech sector, following recent layoffs at major companies such as Google, Amazon, Meta, Twitter, and Microsoft.

LinkedIn had already scaled back its services in China in 2021, citing challenges in meeting the Chinese government’s regulatory requirements. Despite the closure of most services, the company introduced a simplified job-hunting app called InJobs in China later that year.

LinkedIn, headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, will maintain a presence in China to assist companies in hiring and training employees, according to a company spokesperson cited by Reuters. As the sole major Western social media platform operating in China, LinkedIn has faced criticism for cooperating with Chinese censorship, particularly for blacklisting journalists critical of Beijing.
