Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim recently engaged in a conversation with Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, focusing on potential business investments in Malaysia. During the 25-minute virtual meeting, the primary topics of discussion were the introduction of Tesla, the renowned electric vehicle manufacturer, and the expansion of Starlink, Musk’s satellite internet service, in Malaysia.
Prime Minister Anwar expressed a positive outlook on these developments, stating, “I welcome the company’s interest and decision to invest in Malaysia, and Elon Musk’s willingness to come to Malaysia.” He also mentioned that Tesla is set to establish its Malaysian headquarters in Selangor, a state encircling Kuala Lumpur, the nation’s capital, within this year.
Tesla’s venture into the Malaysian market was further highlighted by the company’s announcement earlier in the month that its vehicle models would be available for sale starting July 20. This follows the Malaysian authorities’ approval of Tesla’s application for vehicle importation. In a recent tweet, Tesla confirmed that its Model Y car is now available for orders in Malaysia.
The Malaysian government’s commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 was also a key point in the discussions. Prime Minister Anwar emphasized Malaysia’s readiness to support the clean energy industry, including electric mobility, through a comprehensive plan, ecosystem, and competitive resources.
The meeting explored the potential of Starlink in enhancing internet connectivity across Malaysia, especially in rural areas. Anwar highlighted the positive impact this could have on various sectors, including education, agricultural technology, and income generation for the populace.
The talks between Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Elon Musk represent a significant step in fostering technological advancements and sustainable solutions within Malaysia.
