Kazakhstan and China Enhance Agricultural Cooperation with Prospective Potato Exports

Kazakhstan is preparing to expand its agricultural exports to China by including potatoes, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. Discussions are underway to simplify market access, aiming to boost agricultural exports.

This development was addressed during the inaugural meeting of the Kazakhstan-China Subcommittee on Agricultural Cooperation, conducted via video conference with officials from both countries. The ministry indicated that new protocols will be signed to facilitate trade, potentially enhancing the export of various agricultural products.

In 2024, trade in agricultural products between Kazakhstan and China increased by 10.5%, reaching $1.4 billion. This growth underscores the strengthening economic ties between the two nations.

The meeting also covered cooperation in agricultural science and technology, with proposals to create joint laboratories and develop innovations in biopharmaceuticals and environmental research.

Kazakhstan’s efforts to diversify its agricultural exports are evident in its recent performance. In the 2023/24 agricultural season (September 2023 to August 2024), the country’s potato exports generated $53.7 million in revenue. Commercial potatoes accounted for $42.7 million, with Uzbekistan being the top importer, purchasing $37.4 million worth. Seed potatoes were exported exclusively to Turkmenistan, amounting to $11 million.

The expansion into the Chinese market represents a strategic move for Kazakhstan. The country’s agricultural exports to China have been on the rise, with exports reaching $380 million in the first five months of 2024, contributing to a total bilateral agricultural trade value of $540 million during that period. China is considered the largest market for Kazakhstani agricultural products, and the strengthening of agricultural trade ties between the two nations is a priority.

Kazakhstan primarily exports grain and oilseeds to China while importing Chinese vegetables and nuts. In 2023, Kazakhstan’s agricultural exports to China doubled, reaching $1 billion. To facilitate this trade, Kazakhstan has signed protocols with China, allowing the export of 27 types of agricultural products, including 18 types of crop products and nine types of livestock products.

The inclusion of potatoes in Kazakhstan’s export portfolio to China aligns with the country’s broader strategy to diversify its agricultural exports and tap into new markets. This initiative is expected to further strengthen the economic partnership between Kazakhstan and China, benefiting both nations’ agricultural sectors.
