Mexico Starts a Plan to Increase Local Pork Production and Cut Down Imports

Mexico has rolled out a detailed plan to boost its local pork production and lessen its dependence on imports. This initiative focuses on sustainability and the welfare of animals to build a stronger and more competitive pork industry, both at home and abroad.

During the recent National Pork Day, Agriculture Secretary Julio BerdeguĂ© Sacristán shared the government’s dedication to tackling current and upcoming challenges in pork production. He stressed the importance of an integrated North America, especially regarding food systems. Over the years, Canada, the U.S., and Mexico have worked together to ensure food security in the region.

The Secretary noted that pork consumption in Mexico has risen significantly, partly due to economic growth from the Mexican Fourth Transformation Policy. Currently, Mexico relies on imports for about 47% of its pork needs. To become fully self-sufficient, the country aims to produce an extra 1.4 million tons of pork. Berdegué Sacristán is optimistic that with teamwork and well-planned strategies, Mexico can increase its pork production.

This plan fits into a larger effort to revive local food production and distribution. President Claudia Sheinbaum recently announced initiatives to increase staples like beans and corn, aiming to improve food independence by reducing reliance on imports. The strategy includes reopening government stores for basic goods, ensuring fair prices for corn farmers, and lowering tortilla prices. Additionally, there are plans to boost bean production by 30% and support for instant coffee and cocoa production.

The government’s emphasis on food self-sufficiency shows a broader goal of achieving greater control over essential commodities. By taking these steps, Mexico aims to strengthen its agricultural sector, ensuring food security and promoting sustainable practices in the pork industry and beyond.

The success of this initiative will rely on effective teamwork among government bodies, producers, and other stakeholders to tackle challenges and seize opportunities in local pork production.
