India has officially entered into a free trade agreement with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), consisting of Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein. The agreement was signed in a ceremony in New Delhi, attended by prominent figures including India’s Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. The signing took place after a lengthy period of negotiations, culminating in a decision that marks a significant step in international trade relations for India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred to the agreement as a transformative development and a crucial milestone. He highlighted the deal as an embodiment of mutual commitment to fostering an open and equitable trading environment that would spur economic growth and expand job opportunities, particularly for the youth.

This new trade agreement, formally named the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA), received the green light from India’s Union Cabinet on March 7. Prime Minister Modi emphasized that the agreement is a testament to the solid commitment between India and the EFTA countries toward shared economic prosperity. He remarked on the complementarity of the economies involved, which he believes will lead to beneficial outcomes for all parties. Prime Minister Modi further elaborated on the broader implications of the agreement, stating, “Despite structural diversities in many aspects, our economies possess complementarities that promise to be a win-win situation for all nations involved. With the opening of enormous trading and investment opportunities, we have reached a new level of trust and ambition.”

The signing was witnessed by a high-level delegation from the EFTA member states, including Guy Parmelin, Swiss Federal Councillor and Head of the Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research; Bjarni Benediktsson, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iceland; Dominique Hasler, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Liechtenstein; and Jan Christian Vestre, Minister of Trade and Industry of Norway. On the Indian side, Piyush Goyal expressed his satisfaction with the completion of the agreement, noting it as a “momentous occasion” and the “culmination of nearly 15 years of hard work, tremendous energy, and effort.” He pointed out that the negotiations involved substantial dedication and were indicative of the strong desire to foster closer ties and economic integration between India and the EFTA countries.

The agreement is expected to open up new avenues for trade and investment between India and the EFTA bloc, potentially increasing the economic dynamism and competitiveness of all involved nations. The deal is seen as pivotal not only for the direct economic benefits it will provide but also as a strategic move to enhance geopolitical relationships in a changing global landscape. This historic signing not only signifies a leap forward in economic collaboration but also underlines the importance of international cooperation and the potential for greater prosperity through shared efforts and mutual understanding.
