Shopify, after deciding last year to halt its development of internal fulfillment capabilities to concentrate on cost reduction, continues to maintain a strategic relationship with its logistics sector through an expanding partnership with Flexport.
During an earnings call last year, Shopify President Harley Finkelstein expressed confidence in Flexport’s capabilities to fulfill the company’s logistics vision. Finkelstein highlighted the mutual goal of simplifying access to efficient and reliable fulfillment services for merchants, from port to delivery, with Flexport leading the initiative.
In 2024, this collaboration has seen significant developments, notably with Shopify introducing the new Shopify Fulfillment Network app as part of its “Winter ’24 Edition” update. This application enables Shopify merchants to link their online stores with Flexport for comprehensive fulfillment services, including distribution and delivery.
Flexport has enhanced its fulfillment and shipping services following the acquisition of Shopify Logistics, launching the “Flexpedited” service. This new offering promises delivery within three days or less for approximately 70% of shipments within its network, an improvement from the 25% delivery rate of its standard service. The cost is estimated to be an additional $1.10 per unit.
On its website, Flexport has stated that the Flexpedited service aims to provide merchants with widespread access to expedited delivery speeds at reasonable upgrade costs, avoiding the highest expenses usually associated with air freight. Its “Fast Tags” program, which displays expected delivery dates on Shopify and other platforms, has started to exclusively use the Flexpedited service level from the beginning of this month.
Shopify has made significant investments in Flexport, supporting the logistics company as it enhances its services and aims for profitability. Flexport CEO and founder Ryan Petersen announced in January that the company raised $260 million from Shopify, adding to Shopify’s previous investment in 2022. Following the sale of its logistics business, Shopify also acquired a 13% equity stake in Flexport last year.
