In Madagascar, climate change brings serious challenges, such as strong cyclones, floods, and droughts, which particularly affect vulnerable groups like people with disabilities. To address these challenges, Handicap International (HI) has introduced proactive strategies designed to lessen the impact of disasters before they happen. This forward-thinking approach focuses on taking actions ahead of time to anticipate potential risks, helping to reduce harm to people and property.
HI’s efforts to reduce disaster risks prioritize the needs of marginalized groups, ensuring that those most vulnerable, including individuals with disabilities, are actively involved in planning for and responding to disasters. Through initiatives like ATRIKA, HI provides local communities and organizations with tools, training, and strategies that are inclusive and aimed at minimizing risks. As a result, disaster response plans have improved, and there is greater participation in local decision-making.
By putting inclusion at the heart of disaster risk reduction efforts, HI is working to build resilience against natural disasters and is advocating for necessary changes to better serve all community members. Currently being rolled out in northern Madagascar, this project seeks to create lasting solutions that help reduce vulnerability, especially for those at the greatest risk. With ongoing support and partnership, HI’s proactive approach holds great promise for managing disaster risks in areas deeply impacted by climate change.
