Logistics companies, due to their daily interaction with consumers through online delivery status updates, have become prime targets for phishing scams. Patrick Donahue, VP of Product at Cloudflare, explains that these scams often exploit the urgency and negative situations in shipping, such as missed deliveries requiring immediate action, to deceive consumers.
To combat this, shippers can adopt various cybersecurity measures. These include implementing remote browser isolation and brand protection programs that monitor and shut down fraudulent activities imitating their brand. Additionally, businesses are advised to ensure proper configuration of email security settings like DMARC, DKIM, and SPF, and to avoid sending customer communications from unfamiliar domains.
Despite these precautions, distinguishing between legitimate and fraudulent emails or websites can be challenging for users, as noted in a Cloudflare blog post. The high volume of phishing attacks further complicates this issue.
Phishing scams are not limited to the shipping and logistics sector. Industries such as finance, technology, and telecom also face significant risks. Cloudflare’s data indicates that the most frequently impersonated brands by phishers are AT&T, PayPal, and Microsoft.
