The Tamil Nadu government is set to establish 2 million square feet of IT space in Coimbatore through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI), a key sector for the state’s growth. The announcement was made during the two-day Umagine TN 2025 IT Summit, where Chief Minister MK Stalin highlighted the state’s ongoing efforts to boost the IT sector and promote emerging technologies such as AI, blockchain, IoT, and Electric Vehicles.
The government has been actively working to expand its Global Capability Centres since coming to power, while also driving business and entrepreneurship. Development initiatives are being extended beyond the capital to ensure a balanced and comprehensive economic growth, creating employment opportunities for youth in cities like Coimbatore, Salem, Madurai, Trichy, Hosur, Tirunelveli, and others. This expansion is part of a broader move to digitalize services and enhance security features to counter the rising threat of digital crime.
State IT Minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan emphasized Tamil Nadu’s ambition to become a leading source of human resources globally. Through initiatives like the Naan Mudhalvan scheme, tens of thousands of students have benefited, and the state has solidified its position as a major contributor to India’s technology sector. Tamil Nadu accounts for about 20 percent of India’s engineering and technology output, with around 75 percent of deep tech and innovation patents being filed in Chennai.
Tamil Nadu’s dominance in the technology sector is reflected by the fact that more than 85 percent of people working in the state’s technology sector are of Tamil origin, according to the minister. This human capital is also significantly represented in other major tech hubs across India.
Vijayakumar, CEO of HCL Tech, also stressed the strategic importance of Tamil Nadu for the company. Of its 220,000 global workforce, 160,000 are based in India, with a third located in Tamil Nadu. The state serves as a hub for various industries including IT, manufacturing, professional services, agriculture, and horticulture.
