Disney Releases 2021 Corporate Social Responsibility Report

The Walt Disney Company has unveiled its 2021 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report, providing insight into its initiatives aimed at promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, advancing environmental sustainability, and contributing to communities through charitable endeavors. The report also underscores Disney’s dedication to investing in its employees and conducting responsible operations.

Jennifer Cohen, Executive Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility at The Walt Disney Company, emphasized the unique impact each company has on the world, with Disney’s role being to create inspiring stories and experiences that bring people together and foster positive change.

Key Highlights from the 2021 CSR Report:

  1. Promoting Greater Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion:
    • Disney initiated the “Reimagine Tomorrow” program, leveraging its resources to advance opportunities for diverse communities and amplify underrepresented voices in media and entertainment.
    • New content inclusion standards were implemented, along with a talent acquisition initiative at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
    • Over $150 million of Disney’s annual charitable giving was directed toward programs benefiting underrepresented communities.
    • The company aims to allocate more than 50% of its annual charitable giving to support underrepresented communities and spend at least $1 billion with diverse suppliers by 2024.
  2. Protecting the Planet for Future Generations:
    • Disney continued its commitment to environmental stewardship by working toward its 2030 Environmental Goals.
    • Initiatives included reducing greenhouse gas emissions, minimizing waste, sustainable construction practices, and eco-friendly packaging for a range of classic princess dolls.
    • Partnerships with utility providers were established to create two new solar facilities near Walt Disney World, expected to power up to 40% of the resort’s annual electricity needs.
    • Solar arrays were installed at Castaway Cay and Hong Kong Disneyland, and efforts were made to divert 60% of operational waste from landfills.
  3. Supporting Communities:
    • Disney contributed to the well-being of communities by providing comfort and optimism to people of all ages.
    • Initiatives involved support for children’s hospitals, wish-granting organizations, and thousands of Disney VoluntEARS worldwide.
    • Donations of Disney-themed toys, hospital gowns, and other items were made to over 500 children’s hospitals, and Disney-themed experiences were introduced in five children’s hospitals.
    • Disney supported local food banks globally, donating more than 320 tons of food to aid communities affected by COVID-19.

Disney’s dedication to corporate social responsibility is further underscored by its new social responsibility website, impact.disney.com, which will provide ongoing updates and stories related to its environmental, social, and governance initiatives throughout the year.
